Sydney Dragon Sports Association Dragon Boat Club

Dragon Sports Association (DSA) is a dragon boat racing club in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Dragon boating is one of Australia's fastest growing sports, and is one of the few sports that exercise most of the muscles in the body as well as improving your aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

We are located in Rhodes near Homebush and have our own site with onsite free parking.  We have three dragon boats at Rhodes available for training and two six person outrigger canoes in Drummoyne.  We train all year round on Sundays except for a few weeks off around May.  During the racing season from September/October to March/April we also train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  On Saturday mornings we run outrigger canoe sessions with the number of sessions depending on demand.

We are currently the Premier Mixed 10s 200m and 500m national champions.  We have male and female paddlers of all age groups and many of our paddlers have been selected for state and national teams.  We also provide the opportunity to train and gain accreditation as a sweep.  Our paddlers also provide training to corporate teams and many organisations have realised that dragon boating is great fun and a cost effective team building activity.  Click here to download our corporate brochure.

If you are interested in joining our dragon boating club check out our FAQ page or click "Joining DSA" on the left.  And please use the "Contact Us" page to contact our recruitment officer if you want come and try it out or have further questions.

DBNSW Race 3 - Penrith 500m

Through the eyes of a newbie...

What have I got myself in for? That was the question, and I was soon going to find out.

My first official race day meeting... 500m. Stomach in knots, sweaty palms.  All I kept thinking was OMG... OMG...

As I rolled up to the marshalling area, I thought this is it.  Its now or never.  I seated myself into the boat.  The weather conditions were enough to sink the Titanic, white caps on the water, paddling into a head wind.  This was not going to be pretty.

As we readied ourselved beside the pontoon area, struggling to hang on there was both an eerie silence and excitement in the air before the race.  Hands gripped tightly to the paddle, muscles tense waitong for the battle to begin.  All that was going through my head was George saying, SET UP, POWER, QUICK RETURN.  My head was spinning.

Then we were off!  Battling the conditions, water spraying in my eyes.  I kept thinking 500m, not long, not far, count by 10's.  The beating time of the drum, the grunts, the moaning, watch the paddle in front, lean forward, catch the water....you don’t have time to think much more than that.

Just as I felt I had nothing left in the tank the hooter sounded.  Completely shattered, muscles burning, eyes awash with water.  It's over.  I was completely knackered.

As a newbie it is all worth it in the end.  Great team spirit, great friends, and a great social event.

Until next time... POWER, POWER, POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DBNSW Race 2 - Brooklyn 300-500m Regatta

An early start with everyone asked to get to the Brooklyn site by 7.15am. Most made it by this time but a few thought that 7.15 request was an optional one and so opted for a later start of 8am. Parking was fun with about 500 cars and only 300 parking spots. It looked like a few of us had driven to Brooklyn only to find out we were parking at Hornsby. A few concessions were made though, some double parking and we all got in. worst of all there wasn’t a coffee van, maybe it will turn up later.

The day started with the usual motivational talk from the coaches and everyone was enthusiastic about applying the new technique we had been working on. Most of all we were keen about improving our timing knowing that this was an essential ingredient to perform well.

DBNSW Race 1 - Penrith 200m Regatta

The first official regatta for the season.  It was an early start to the day and the heavy fog out at Penrith wasn't helping either.  However, once it cleared it turned out to be pretty good weather-wise.  Overcast with sunny breaks.  I'm quite certain the sunny breaks were very much appreciated by all paddlers (especially those trying to dry out!).
