Our Senior B team have officially left the country and are en route to Ravenna, Italy for the 14th Club Crew World Championships. Our beloved member Kate, of the DSA Senior B team, recounts the team’s journey battling the elements, as they have endured training during Sydney’s winter and fierce determination to gain even more strength to compete against the best in the world.
How are you (and the team) feeling going to the Club Crew World Championships?
It’s only just becoming real. For months we’ve been training hard throughout the cold winter nights, finally the departure date has arrived, and racing starts next week! Hard to believe. Everyone is super excited to get there and get started.

Which teams are considered favourites to win? Are there any dark horses or underdog teams to watch out for?
Apparently, the Americans and Canadians, but who knows? Any northern hemisphere team is at an advantage, having been able to train in their summer without winter colds and illnesses wreaking havoc in their schedule.
What is your training schedule like?
George has issued a huge challenge to the girls to get stronger, and the boys to lose weight. We’ve been hard at it in the gym, on the erg and dropping kilos. Last count we lost a total of 50+ kilos. Apart from that it’s been 3x a week on the water.

What are the biggest challenges facing the teams competing in this year's championships? Are there any significant injuries or other obstacles to overcome?
The main problem apart from winter colds and flus interrupting training, has been not having the whole team in one place. We picked up a fantastic new member (Ange) who lives in Queensland, so we have only trained twice with her, and Kaz moved back to Japan. Thankfully Kira and Janine spent the last month in Sydney, so we were able to have them in the boat.
Apparently the conditions on the water are changeable in Ravenna, so our winter training on the Parramatta River could come in handy! Dodging ferry wash and big swells.
What are you planning on doing afterwards? Any exciting plans travelling around Europe?
My youngest son is joining me in Ravenna and we’re travelling around Italy for 3 weeks after the competition. Really haven’t had time to plan that much, all the focus has been on the first week racing.
