The Australian Dragon Boat Championships were held over 5 days between 20th and 24th April 2017 at Gateway Island, Wodonga. DSA was represented by 38 members competing in Premier, Senior A and Senior B divisions. During the first two days the senior division racing was held and the senior paddlers showed their paddling experience. DSA came away with two bronze medals in the Senior B mixed division during a very wet second day.
On the third day the State teams competed for the honour of the best paddling State in Australia. Thirteen DSA members represented NSW teams across the three divisions. All of them came back with medals as NSW dominated the racing.
The last two days of racing saw the junior and premier divisions racing as the sun came out and the speed of racing heated up. DSA competed in the premier division and went close to making the finals in very strong competition.
For many DSA members this was their first National Championships and was a good experience of how tough racing can be at this level. Many will come back next year with more experience and ready to compete again.
