SIRC, Penrith. NSW October 12th: Warm up quickly led to the marshalling for the first race of the day, the Mixed B team now blue was up first. It all went by so quickly; Diana backing us up to the pontoon, a quick start, a mad scramble and then it was all over. Whilst the race distance was longer than the 240m at Dobroyd, that 500m passed by a lot quicker than you think, how could it have taken over two minutes to get to the end! The Mixed A crew was up next, they raced into the heat taking out second place. After that the day seemed to fly past with the boys (3rd in the first heat of Premier Opens) followed by the girls flying home in first place (yeah), even if we did look like a caterpillar as we wriggled over the line. It was a fantastic day with the warm weather, sunscreen being applied by the bottle full as some of the team decided to work on their tans, which had faded away over winter. Cheering loudly we progressed into the 2nd round of heats and onto finals. All our trainee sweeps took to the water doing what I would describe as an excellent job, poor George obviously worried that they might show him up that he had to pull the pin for the men’s finals?? The finals were amazing, the girls won, and I get to tell all that we won in the finals, and the mixed teams did well too with the A team coming third and the B team in 5th place. I was surprised that we made the finals at all but really pleased to be there. The boys made it over the line in just under 5 minutes, always annoying when you have no steering mechanism, such a shame as the first 30 strokes looked great! Just when we thought it was all over and that there would only be one team in the 2000m (go the A team) George tells us that he entered both mixed teams, what was he thinking! The Mixed A team did well in their race, coming second over all and the Mixed B team came in 7th, I can’t believe that we raced that far but it was great when we finished. The trophies make up for some of that pain. Are they all that small? Then the better part of the day, as my buddy directed me to the pub, I realised that’s what your buddy is for, to get you a well earned beverage (non alcoholic of course) after the races! Slept very well after a long but great day and did the maths that with all the races we paddled over 8.5kms!
