2008/2009 Dragon Boating season kicked off on 31st Aug with Dobroyd Regatta hosted by Tsunami. The day had a relaxed atmosphere giving those novice paddlers an opportunity to get their feet wet and some exposure as to what’s involved when it comes to the world of Dragon Boat racing. It was also a great chance for the more experienced paddler to ruffle their feathers, meet up with old friends and get re-acquainted with team members who went into hibernation over the winter months. A friendly rivalry was re-born as teams cheered each other on from the river side, and no doubt the passion and comradery will continue to build as the season progresses. The day saw teams race with half boats consisting of 10 paddlers, a drummer and the all important sweep (won’t be getting over the finish line without them) take to the water with a combination of mixed, women’s, opens and masters crews. All in all DSA had a great result for the day taking out gold, silver & bronze in the Premier Mixed division (a magnificent effort & feat not achieve previously by any other club), gold in Premier Women’s and silver in both the Master's Mixed & Master's Open divisions. It was a fantastic start for the club and an indication of the season to come – DSA off and racing.
