17th-22nd April 2019
Well another nationals campaign done and certainly `Dusted’, with Canberra turning on the weather for 5 days of intense racing.
To me, our campaign started just after the short Christmas break. The focus and effort at training began to intensify, leading to success at the State Championships and continuing into Nationals.
The expectations were high, medals for the Seniors boat and finals for the Prems.
After the heats and semis on the first morning, it looked like it was going to be a long week, with 2 below par performances, but enough to make the final in lane 6. Waiting for marshalling, Fiona suggested we do a quick warm up, more so to get our heads together as a team. This, with a further rev up from George, Kira and Brett, we gave it our all and picked up a silver medal.
This race turned the momentum around for the whole club. The teamwork, commitment and effort was there for all to see, with the highlight being the Seniors earning 3 Gold and 3 Silver medals.
But the momentum did not stop there. The Prems turned it on from race 1 and it continued through to the end. The effort and commitment from everyone was huge, making all the semifinals, and just missing a few finals, remembering we were up against the very best teams in Australia.
As one of the team captains, I was very proud of the whole team’s performance over the 5 days.
I must congratulate those paddlers that represented NSW on day 3 with most bringing home medals for their efforts.
Campaigns like this take many hours and people to make it run smoothly, so there is a big thank you to pass on. Firstly George, for not just preparing the teams, but all the many other aspects of getting the club to Canberra, Jess our amazing manager, who was everywhere making it so much easier for everyone on and off the water, the team captains for their assistance, and to all you paddlers, for your cooperation and support throughout the 5 days.
Thank you all, enjoy whatever break you are going to have, and see you next time on the water
