DSA Life Membership Awards...

Season 2005/2006 was the first time DSA has awarded this prestigious trophy, not an award given lightly, and it went to 3 of our DSA Club members with a combined time of almost 45 years with this great club of ours.

.

George Louie

A founding member of DSA, George has been apart of dragon boat racing and DSA for over 25 years. Over this time George has been a committed paddler, actively held most committee roles, and has been the DSA head coach since 1991. As a paddler George has represented NSW at every State Championships and Australia at the World Championships in Poznan, Poland in 2003 and Shanghai, China in 2004. As coach, apart from leading DSA to State and National medals, attending World Club Championships in New Zealand, he was also the successful NSW & Australian head coach during 2004/2005 for the Australian State Championships and the World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

It is George’s drive, loyalty and enthusiasm for the club and the sport, which has provided much of the momentum for the club over the years. Also his passion and contribution to the sport in general has also seen him being awarded the honour of life membership of Dragon Boats NSW.

Sharon Lockett (Aka Shaz)

Since joining DSA in 1995 Shaz has played a lead role in the club both as a paddler representing Australia in both the China (2004) & Berlin, Germany (2005) World Championships and as one of the clubs chief organisers. After serving as secretary since 2001, Shaz also took on the additional responsibility of being president during the highly successful 2005/2006 season, where the DSA women’s crew won their first ever State & National medals.

Shaz has always given generously of her time, effort and knowledge, particularly with the day-to-day tasks, without which the club would not operate as efficiently as it does. But it’s the buzz of race days, keeping fit and mostly the members of DSA (or DSA family as its known…) that keep her coming back year after year.

Simon Wong
A member of DSA since 1993, Simon is one of the quiet achievers of the club. Simon has been both a committed paddler over the years, and the chief race and training sweep for many seasons. A familiar face at nearly every training session, Simon provides the quiet words of encouragement to our new members. Simon’s most memorable experience was a club trip to Penang and Hong Kong, and he considers his best achievement as a sweep was to successfully cross the finish line at the 2003/2004 National Championships in Perth.

These races were considered by most who attended to be dragon boats equivalent of a smash up derby, and were incredibly difficult conditions for the sweeps of all clubs! With boats crashing and / or sinking in nearly every race, this was a medal winning achievement by Simon, not that modesty would allow him to tell you this, as Simon is rightly known as the true gentleman of DSA.
